Technology: Good or Evil?

I am writing this from LA and as I sit at my desk there are 3 articles in papers and magazines talking about the impact of modern technology on communication, and I found these articles so interesting. I thought I would write something from my perspective as someone who travels full time and has a desire to maintain relationships, keep friends and partners up to date with what is happening in our lives and ministry, and also comment on things that I see happening across the global church and the world.

Many articles seem to stress the negative impact of technology on relationships, face-to-face dialogue and effective communication. As someone who communicates for a living, I actually see modern technology as a powerful tool to communicate the Gospel and maintain strong relationships in an increasingly connected global and shrinking world.

I know that in the age of blogs, twitter, facebook, myspace and the like, there are things we must be aware of. My personal thought is that if we are more concerned about who and how many are following us on twitter rather than how many are NOT following Jesus in life, then we have a problem. With things like MY Space, MY facebook, MY blog and MY twitter, there can be the temptation of becoming narcissistic, self-centered, and thinking life is all about me and my opinion.

But if we use technology for the right reason, then we can potentially be the generation that actually evangelises the planet before the second coming of Christ. We can be a generation that goes into the uttermost parts of the earth and can simultaneously stay connected with all that God is doing across the earth. We can provide and make accessible resources like never before, and communicate to those who would otherwise never hear the Gospel. We can plant churches like never before, and stay part of a local work, whilst simultaneously having a global impact.

The reason I choose to use twitter is to stay connected to people I would otherwise never be able to keep up with. As our family travels so extensively it helps us to stay grounded, accessible and connected and keep our many prayer partners up to date with what is happening. Many people write and ask how they can stay connected to us personally, as well as with all that is going on in the ministry, and I avail myself of technology in order to be able to do that expediently and effectively.

Things are constantly on the move, advancing, changing and developing from The A21 Campaign and Human trafficking , to Project Europe and leadership development, to our conference and church speaking schedule. I find all the communication tools a way to make life easier, simpler and keep anyone in the loop who wants to be.

I feel we should use whatever tools help us be able to reach more people for Christ. As long as we keep everything in the right perspective, then we can make technology work for us.

So for all of you who want to stay in the loop on a day-to-day basis, here are a few tips on how you can technically stay connected:

It is prayer that changes things - not technology. James 5:16 says: The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much.

So let's use the technology to gain inspiration and information because together we can pray specifically, and in unity, and see God outwork His purposes on the earth!

Love + Freedom + Hope

What an exciting week we have had, and weekend we are entering in to. I love Easter and all that it represents. New life, new hope, new beginnings - the power of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. He paid the price for our sins and I really cannot wrap my mind around the magnitude of what God has done for us. This message of grace, love, freedom and hope must be proclaimed throughout the earth.

I am particularly thinking of the girls in our shelter in Greece at this time who have been rescued from a life of slavery and are being restored by His love. I know that for them, this Easter has a special meaning of new beginnings. We are helping two of the girls as they testify against their trafficker who is in prison with a lengthy court case ahead, but we believe that justice will prevail and that our fight against the abhorrent practice of human trafficking will not be in vain.

Also, at our annual Colour Your World Women's Conference, Bobbie Houston, my Senior Pastor, announced an exciting new initiative called BE HER FREEDOM. This is an alliance between the Colour Sisterhood (www.coloursisterhood.com) and The A21 Campaign.

Be Her Freedom is about everyday women the world over who want to raise awareness, bring solution and make a united stand against the unacceptable crime of human trafficking. I love the thought that God can use normal everyday people like us to help be someone else's freedom. I have discovered in most cases WE ARE THE ANSWER to our own prayers.

We can either be overwhelmed by the statistics and think it is too big an issue to tackle, or we can decide that I CAN MAKE a difference. You know, a million people is a statistic until you meet one and then everything changes. I have met the one, and so the statistics are definitely no longer just a number to me - they represent individual lives, stories, destinies.

If you want to become part of the miracle story and help to rescue a girl then go to www.beherfreedom.org to find out more information.

For regular updates on the A21 Campaign go to www.theA21campaign.org

Together I know we are making a difference. Let's be the message of Easter to these girls: forgiveness, freedom, new life, hope and dignity

Love Chris xoxo

Xpistos Anesti (in Greek at Easter we say Christ is Risen as we greet one another, to which we reply TRULY HE IS RISEN) - I love that!

Thoughts In Transit from Paris to London

I am typing this sitting on the Eurostar at the tail end of a 6-week ministry trip to 10 cities in 4 nations, and am in awe of all that God is doing across the earth. I am increasingly aware of all that still remains to be done...

Across this trip we have had the opportunity to see thousands of people come to Christ, churches strengthened, people healed and restored, leaders trained and developed, and were given the privilege of speaking to members of the European Parliament about human trafficking in Europe and the A21 Campaign. Even as I write (type on my BlackBerry) these things, I still cannot believe that God allows us to do this - what an honour.

The Bible says that "God is able to do exceedingly above and beyond all that we could ask or think." (Eph 3:20) This is a day to be stirring up the gift of faith that we have been given, and believing God that we would do great exploits for His Kingdom. There is so much fear all over the world, but we MUST remember that "God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind. (2 Tim 1:7) We need to press in and be strong and courageous in this hour, and I believe we shall see the EXCEEDINGLY ABOVE and BEYOND miracle working power of God in our lives.

I say all of this after just reading a report about a new trafficked victim that we just took into our shelter. She is a young girl from Eastern Europe who has been held in the bondage of sex slavery through trafficking. As I read the report of the condition in which she arrived, I wept. She came in and had been beaten and severely raped over and over again... I seriously have no words to describe the depth of my feelings... all I KNOW is that we MUST continue to help these victims and provide a way out for them.

It is easy to be overwhelmed by this issue, but each day we choose to stand on Eph 3:20 and I believe that God is able if we are willing.
