I am writing this from LA and as I sit at my desk there are 3 articles in papers and magazines talking about the impact of modern technology on communication, and I found these articles so interesting. I thought I would write something from my perspective as someone who travels full time and has a desire to maintain relationships, keep friends and partners up to date with what is happening in our lives and ministry, and also comment on things that I see happening across the global church and the world.
Many articles seem to stress the negative impact of technology on relationships, face-to-face dialogue and effective communication. As someone who communicates for a living, I actually see modern technology as a powerful tool to communicate the Gospel and maintain strong relationships in an increasingly connected global and shrinking world.
I know that in the age of blogs, twitter, facebook, myspace and the like, there are things we must be aware of. My personal thought is that if we are more concerned about who and how many are following us on twitter rather than how many are NOT following Jesus in life, then we have a problem. With things like MY Space, MY facebook, MY blog and MY twitter, there can be the temptation of becoming narcissistic, self-centered, and thinking life is all about me and my opinion.
But if we use technology for the right reason, then we can potentially be the generation that actually evangelises the planet before the second coming of Christ. We can be a generation that goes into the uttermost parts of the earth and can simultaneously stay connected with all that God is doing across the earth. We can provide and make accessible resources like never before, and communicate to those who would otherwise never hear the Gospel. We can plant churches like never before, and stay part of a local work, whilst simultaneously having a global impact.
The reason I choose to use twitter is to stay connected to people I would otherwise never be able to keep up with. As our family travels so extensively it helps us to stay grounded, accessible and connected and keep our many prayer partners up to date with what is happening. Many people write and ask how they can stay connected to us personally, as well as with all that is going on in the ministry, and I avail myself of technology in order to be able to do that expediently and effectively.
Things are constantly on the move, advancing, changing and developing from The A21 Campaign and Human trafficking , to Project Europe and leadership development, to our conference and church speaking schedule. I find all the communication tools a way to make life easier, simpler and keep anyone in the loop who wants to be.
I feel we should use whatever tools help us be able to reach more people for Christ. As long as we keep everything in the right perspective, then we can make technology work for us.
So for all of you who want to stay in the loop on a day-to-day basis, here are a few tips on how you can technically stay connected:

It is prayer that changes things - not technology. James 5:16 says: The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much.
So let's use the technology to gain inspiration and information because together we can pray specifically, and in unity, and see God outwork His purposes on the earth!
